Rock Band 4 To Be Released in 2015

Harmonix, the studio responsible for the popular Rock Band series, as well as the first two iterations of Guitar Hero, among others, announced today that owners of Xbox One and PS4 can expect to play Rock Band 4 sometime this year. The announcement comes 5 years after the most recent Rock Band title. An exact release date has not yet been given.

In news that will surely excite veteran Rock Band fans, it appears that all previously purchased DLC will be recoverable on your new platform. However, as the DLC is tied to your account, those who changed platforms will not be quite as lucky. Harmonix is currently in talks with Microsoft and Sony to find a solution to make your old controllers backward compatible as well. Best guess for now is that solution will come in the form of 'sold-separately' adapters, similar to the ones sold for PS3/360 headphones and the like.

The studio also says they do not plan on making frequent sequels like they did the first go-around, choosing instead to use Rock Band 4 as a foundation that can be built upon over the coming years. You might remember Destiny and a handful of other franchises choosing this same tactic. It is an emerging trend that seems to favor the consumer. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is irritated by having to shell out $60 every year for roster updates (Looking at you, EA Sports) or $150 for new skins and maps (Ahem... Call of Duty). Gamers should be expect continual updates to Rock Band 4.
Developers also say they have been working hard to get things simpler and more back to the basics, acknowledging they had been trying to innovate in the wrong ways. Not many specifics were given, but you can expect this title to make you fall in love with Rock Band again.

It is worth noting that, due to licensing issues, songs from The Beatles: Rock Band and songs found on the discs of previous versions will not be available in Rock Band 4. That shouldn't keep you from Rockband-ing out to the thousands of other songs available to you.
